Being successful as a facilities manager takes a unique blend of skill sets and knowledge. Having the ability to manage complex projects, coordinate with different stakeholders, and being able to work under pressure are all crucial to your success. Whether you’re just getting started looking into a career as a facilities manager or you are a seasoned pro, here are 3 characteristics of a successful facilities manager.

Curiosity and Desire for Knowledge Being a facilities manager means working with a wide variety of people across many different disciplines. In order to be effective, you need to have a working knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of each of the employees, contractors, and stakeholders that you coordinate with. Gaining this understanding takes an innate curiosity for understanding how processes work.


Leadership Ability The successful facilities manager needs to be both a manager and a leader. As a manager you’ll be responsible for tracking projects and coordinating resources in order to accomplish tasks. As a leader you’ll need to be able to influence different stakeholders to work effectively and reach a common goal. You’ll also need to be effective at resolving conflicts and communicating effectively across all of the different stakeholders you encounter.

An Ability to Work Well Under Pressure Facilities managers need to be consummate problem solvers. There will be many days in which multiple things go wrong and you’ll be expected to quickly address and solve those problems as they arise. Being able to manage stress and pressure well are crucial traits for any facilities manager. It also requires a resourcefulness in order to understand how to anticipate and quickly solve common problems.
